Sabarmati riverfront snippets

The Sabarmati riverfront could well become Ahmedabad’s much needed green lung with officials deciding to set aside almost 40 per cent of land on the banks for gardens. The Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) unfolded plans to develop around 200 acres as gardens all along the project. Ahmedabad municipal commissioner IP Gautam said, “SRFDCL had dedicated 37 per cent land for green purposes. These theme-based parks and gardens have been designed by a panel of experts entrusted with the task of creating innovative designs. Plantation has already started on some stretches. There will lakhs of trees and more than 100 varieties.” City-based urban forestry expert Lavkumar Khachar has also been instrumental in designing the green spaces. A major attraction will be an ecological park spread across 1.58 lakh square metres. “The park will come up near Vasna Barrage. Visitors will also get a chance to walk through a thick forest area to the iconic moving tower which will be constructed in the periphery of the barrage,” Gautam added.
