Ahmedabad BRTS gets global award

The Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) run by the Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL) won the first Union Internationale des Transports Public (UITP) award, launched for doubling the public transport market share worldwide. AJL won the ‘Daring Ambitions Award’ in the regional category. The Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) University network planning for the BRTS corridor selection project won the ‘Best Design Award’ in the knowledge and research category. Recognising the role public transport plays in boosting economic growth while respecting environment, reducing congestion and providing mobility in ever-growing cities, UITP launched a strategy in June 2009 with the aim of doubling the public transport market share worldwide by 2025. There were 155 entries from 43 countries. The award will be given on April 13 during the 59th UITP world congress and exhibition in Dubai. UITP is an international network for public transport authorities and operators, policy decisionmakers, scientific institutes and the public transport supply and service industry.
