Somewhere in Pune....

Citizens and civic organizations, livid with the chaos a headless Pune Municipal Corporation now presents, want the state government to intervene. “The city has to face a situation where its Member of Parliament (Suresh Kalmadi) is behind bars, its municipal commissioner (Mahesh Zagade) has been sent away on training, the additional commissioners are on leave and the heads of departments and staff is conspicuously missing. Above all, we have a mayor who says God will take care of the city. It is a pathetic situation,” said college student Viraj Patil. Satish Khot, president of National Society for Clean Cities, in a letter to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has said that, “Pune is riddled with scams regarding land matters and building permissions. Zagade was working at building systems and safeguards to ensure that the rule of law would prevail in these areas. This has not been to the liking of the nexus and hence all efforts are being made to transfer Zagade.” He also wrote, “On behalf of citizens, I would like to suggest that, as there is just a month until Zagade completes his training, he should be allowed to come back and assume charge. Instructions should be given to the civic administration to not take any major decisions nor repeal any of Zagade's decisions. This would ensure that Pune will continue to function well.”
