Chakan set to bag GE India plant

In what is another feather in the cap for Maharashtra, leading global firm General Electric (GE) has decided to pump Rs 1000 crore for a setting up a manufacturing plant in the state. According to details, confirmed by the state industries department, GE India, which is the Indian subsidiary of the US giant, will be setting up a plant on a 70-acre plot at Chakan in Pune. Dr Kshtrapati Shivaji, principal secretary, industries department, said that the facility will be used by the firm to manufacture turbines, power compressors, locomotive diesel engines and its components, and electrical equipment. The department, which had recently struck a deal with Chinese commercial vehicle giant Foton for investment in the state, is gung-ho about its latest catch. Apart from foreign direct investment, the GE plant, said Shivaji, is expected to generate direct employment opportunities for over 2600 people. Shivaji further said that a few thousands are also expected to benefit from indirect employment generated by way of allied business activity that will be created on account of the plant.
