Somewhere in Gujarat....

Farmers from 30 villages surrounding the proposed 6,000 MW nuclear power plant at Mithivirdi, about 40 km from Bhavnagar, are gearing up for another round of agitation against the project.
Members of Gujarat Anu Urja Mukti Andolan, a forum that is leading the protests, said farmers will take out a 50-km tractor rally from Jaspara village to Bhavnagar and submit a memorandum to the district collector on September 23.
Farmers have been claiming that the 777.80 hectares land that is proposed to be acquired for the nuclear plant is fertile — about 603 hectares — and they would lose their livelihood. In Jaspara alone, 749.67 ha is proposed to acquired, a major chunk (584.94 ha) of it is private land.
Activists including veteran Gandhian Chunibhai Vaidya, Dr Kanubhai Kalsaria, Sanat Mehta and Rohit Prajapati have been leading the agitation against the project since 2010.
“Around 280 farmers have prepared notorized affidavits saying they don’t want a power plant here at the cost of their fertile land. Copies of affidavits will be sent to the union environment and forests ministry,” said Prajapati.
The plant is proposed to be built by acquiring land in Jaspara, Mandva, Khadpar and Mithivirdi villages. Anti nuclear activists have also been opposing the plant due to threats of radiation.
The project, which got an in-principle nod by the Centre in October 2009, is to be implemented in three phases.
