Of GSDPs....

Smaller states and Union Territories are doing well on the economic front with Puducherry and Meghalaya clocking over 10% gross state domestic product growth in 2013-14. Among the bigger states, Madhya Pradesh tops the chart, recording 9.64% growth, leaving behind Bihar, which managed 8.97%. MP, under BJP's Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has pushed Bihar, which was at the top for the last few years, to the fourth spot.
States showing a sharp improvement in economic growth, besides Madhya Pradesh, include West Bengal and Jharkhand. Bengal managed a growth rate of 7.78% in 2013-14, reflecting a significant improvement from 5.36% in 2012-13 and 2.71% in 2011-12, the year when Mamata Banerjee took over as chief minister.
After recording the fastest growth among states last year, Bihar saw a moderation in growth after the Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) parted ways with BJP. According to CSO's latest data, Maharashtra bounced back to fifth position with 8.36% growth after a dismal 4.47% in 2012-13. Once labelled backward, Jharkhand also performed well during 2013-14, the year when India's economy grew less than 5%. The state recorded 6.93% growth.
While data for Gujarat and Kerala was not available, the industrial state of Tamil Nadu bounced back with 6.86% growth compared to 2.22% during the previous year.
States such as Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh disappointed. Among the states, Odisha was at the bottom with 1.87% growth, followed by Chhattisgarh (2.53%), Rajasthan (3%), Punjab (3.30%) and UP (3.43%) during 2013-14. For the last few years, these states have continued to slip, derailing the country's overall growth.
