Motown musings

The apex body of the country's automotive industry has said that leapfrogging to Bharat Stage-VI emission norms from the current BS-IV levels could compromise vehicle safety.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said moving directly to the stiffer BS-VI standard could lead to major safety compromises as newly manufactured passenger vehicles would require a huge technological upgrade. It asked for the adoption of sequentially developed, tested and validated technology, adhering to all safety standards in the country.
“Notwithstanding the lead time required, industry has proposed an accelerated timeline for introducing BS-V to 2019 and BS-VI by 2023, as against 2020 and 2024 proposed by the Expert Committee on Auto Fuel Vision & Policy ,“ said Vikram Kirloskar, president, SIAM.
The ministry of road transport and highways and the petroleum ministry had proposed moving directly to BS-VI norms.
