A Metro for Vadodara?

The Vadodara Urban Development Authority (VUDA) has made provisions for a metro train to boost urban transport in the city . It has chalked out two routes where metro trains can ply while it is in the process of identifying a third route.
The two metro routes that have been identified by VUDA includes one that will run circular to the 75 m inner ring road and 90 m outer ring road. The development plan for these major proposed ring roads in VUDA limits has already received Gujarat government's nod. The ring roads that are proposed to be 24 m to 40 m broad will run almost parallel to each other. The two ring roads have an approximate length of 60 km.
However, the feasibility for such big-investment project remains questionable in the city where even Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is struggling to take off.
“We are being future-ready . The decision on starting metro train in the city rests with the state government but we want to ensure that we have enough provisions for the metro when it gets sanctioned,“ said VUDA chairman N V Patel.
If this route is selected for metro project, it will provide connectivity to the IT, technology and knowledge nodes proposed in the VUDA limits. The second route that VUDA has identified runs parallel to the nearly 70-km long Jambusar-Dabhoi railway line.
“We are presently working on the third alternative route that can come up on one of the two 30 m roads running parallel to Narmada's Vadodara branch canal. This can cover both VMC and VUDA limits,“ said Patel.
