1000 tons of polythene removed from the Dal Lake

One thousand tonnes of polythene was removed from the famous Dal lake and its periphery as part of a campaign against the hazardous product in Kashmir. Different sections of society joined hands against the use of polythene and during the last seven days, 1000 tonnes of polythene was taken out from the lake and its periphery, officials said on Monday. Besides Lakes and waterways development authority (LAWDA), pollution control board and Srinagar municipal corporation (SMC), several NGOs, students, houseboat owners and commoners joined hands to clean the waterbody. Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, said this could be possible only with the help of peoples’ participation and their willingness to adopt alternate methods. Ganai said Dal lake is the life line of the Valley and every effort needs to be taken to restore its grandeur. The tourism department, SMC, Nigeen Lake conservation Organization (NLCO), a NGO, Srinagar district administration and other government, semi government and private institutions jointly organized a massive rally to keep Dal lake and Nigeen polythene free zone. Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner, SMC Farooq Ahmad Renzu said “we should ensure polythene does not come to Srinagar.” Renzu said Presidents of all NGOs will be part of Citizens Council to ensure that antipolythene drive launched in a big way continues.
