Ten Rupees in new coin format

Starting next week, the Reserve Bank of India will circulate specially designed Rs 10 coins. The bimetallic coins will replace the ten-rupee notes that have been in circulation for decades. The coins have already been introduced in Mumbai, New Delhi and Hyderabad and will hit Chennai in the coming week. The introduction of the coin is an indication that RBI may plan to get rid of the tenrupee notes, eventually. The Rs 10 coin was to have been released three years ago but was delayed due to technical problems. Introduction of the coin is aimed at reducing the intrinsic value of the denomination, prevention of counterfeiting, and easier identification, RBI officials said. Designed by the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, based on the theme of ‘Unity in Diversity’, the Rs 10 coin weighs 8 gm. It has a diameter (28 millimetres), which is larger than that of the Rs 2 coin. According to RBI officials, the obverse or main side of the coin has a picture of the threeheaded lion with the numeral 10 and year of production. On the reverse side are doublelines criss-crossing each other, with a dot in each corner and the denomination emblazoned in Hindi and English around it. While the outer surface of the coin is made of a nickel-bronze mixture, the inner metal is ferrous steel. The NID had prepared three designs, based on different themes — Unity in Diversity, Mudras from Bharatanatyam and Connectivity and Information Technology. Reserve Bank sources said that after a month new bimetallic ten rupee coins with the theme Connectivity and Information Technology will also be circulated in Tamil Nadu.
