Jaipur Metro snippets

The urban development department plans to combine the expertise of the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) with private partners for the Jaipur Metro. The proposal has been approved by the urban development minister Shanti Dhariwal on Wednesday after discussions with officials of Union government and Asian Development Bank (ADB). The proposal will soon be sent for the state cabinet’s approval.
“It has been decided the DMRC shall be handed over the responsibility for the construction of the metro corridor, while the rolling stock will be developed in a publicprivate partnership (PPP) model. A similar model has proved effective in Delhi,” said Dhariwal. The rolling stock comprises rail locomotive and coaches.
According to the new proposal, the collaboration of DMRC along with private partners would help speed up work on metro. However, the government has kept its options open and if a favourable proposal is not received by June 2011, the rolling stock work could also be handed over to the DMRC.
Jaipur Metro has become a prestige project for the state government, and the urban development department wants to get it operational, at least partly, by 2013. Once cleared by the state government, DMRC will be assigned the construction over the next few months. “While DMRC will start the construction, private partners will be finalised by June 2011,” said Dhariwal. However, the proposed mixed arrangement will be applicable only on the 9.25 km-long corridor to be developed from Mansarovar to Chandpole in the first phase. The Metro will run on elevated tracks from Mansarovar to Sindhi Camp, while the remaining 500 metres will be covered through an underground tunnel.
The 9.25 km stretch is estimated to cost nearly Rs 3,200 crore, of which nearly Rs 1,000 crore will be provided by the state government. The remaining amount will be funded by the Centre, and a loan will also be sought from the ADB. The DMRC will be granted the rolling stock work for Line 1 from Durgapura to Panipech and Line 2 from Mansarovar to Badi Choupar . The mega-project is yet to get clearances at several levels, including the funding agencies.
