Dead Dolphin washes ashore on Elephanta coast

An 8-ft-long dolphin washed ashore on the Elephanta coast on Tuesday. The alarming development came just days after three whales washed ashore on and around the Mumbai coast, besides several dead turtles. The dolphin’s carcass had deep cuts and bruises on it. Abhay Shinde, licensing officer of the fisheries department (Panvel-Uran) said the dolphin was found on the rocky Elephanta coast and its carcass had since been consigned to flames. Marine biologists have urged for an in-depth analysis of the “disturbing trend”. The bodies of three dead whales, which washed ashore on the Mumbai, Uran and Diveagar coast, were also disposed of without conducting any post-mortem. Dr Jiyalal Jaiswar, a scientist at National Institute of Oceanography who recently won the prestigious Bharat Jyoti Award for his contribution in the field of ocean science, said a staggering 24 dead turtles were found on the Murud and Shrivardhan coasts on March 30.
