Maharashtra’s first Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to be set up in Nagpur was cleared by the union (human resource develoment) HRD ministry on Tuesday. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the development stating the ministry had earlier granted in-principle approval for the institution and on Tuesday, the final nod was given by the HRD minister Smriti Irani. Earlier, education minister Vinod Tawde tweeted about HRD ministry’s decision. A communiqué mailed by Tawde mentioned that Irani granted approval after a detailed discussion with him. Terming development as golden moment in state’s education history, Tawde said IIM-Nagpur is privileged to be mentored by IIM-Ahmedabad. It would commence operations from 2015-16 academic session, he added.
Senior officials from the state informed that out of six institutes proposed by the finance minister Arun Jaitley, Nagpur's was only one to get clearance. Others proposed in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar, and Odisha were yet to finalize location. The last one to be set up was in Andhra Pradesh as part of its reorganization bill at Vizag. Jaitley had allocated 500 crore for setting up these institutions, amid concerns that increasing number would dilute quality of Brand IIM.
Officials gave credit of Nagpur's success to the efforts by CM who personally directed the joint director of technical education Gulab Thakre and collector Abhishek Krishna in the city to finalize the makeshift facility for operating IIM until the permanent one came up.
