Somewhere in Kerala....

Protests in Kerala against the Centre's notification restricting sale of cattle for slaughtering at markets took an ugly turn after Youth Congress cadres slaughtered a calf in public in Kannur city, drawing the ire of almost all parties.

The incident happened on Saturday evening when the protesters, led by Rijil Makutty, brought a calf in a lorry and slaughtered it on board the vehicle, in front of the public. The meat was then distributed free of cost to the people.

The public slaughter, however, snowballed into a controversy on Sunday with BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan posting a video on Twitter with the comment, “Cruelty at its peak. Cattle slaughtering by Kerala Youth Congress leader in broad daylight, in front of public gathering.“

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi condemned the incident as well. “What happened in Kerala yesterday is thoughtless, barbaric and completely unacceptable to me and the Congress Party. I strongly condemn the incident,“ he tweeted.
