Sewri - Uran Rail link

The MMRDA has revived the Sewri-Uran rail link, which was dropped four years ago. The agency, with the help of Cidco, has prepared the design of the link, which will cater to the metro as well as suburban rail services.Initially taken up by MSRDC, the project was abandoned following political pressure to expedite work on the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) between Nhava and Sewri. According to rough estimates, the project will require around Rs 7,000 crore, an amount equal to the cost of the MTHL being funded by MMRDA and executed by the MSRDC. Confirming the move, G R Madan, director for mass rapid transit system (MRTS) of MMRDA, said, “The blue print will be ready soon, after which the state administration’s approval will be sought.’’ MMRDA spokesman Dilip Kawathkar said two tracks will be used—standard gauge for metro and broad gauge for locals. “The World Bank is keen to fund the proposed Prabhadevi-Sewri-Nhava-(Uran)-Panvel link,’’ said an official. Cidco and the railways have expedited work on Nerul-Seawoods-Belapur-Uran link, which will be connected to the MMRDA’s link at Uran. “These new tracks will be connected with another metro track proposed between the existing airport and the proposed one at Panvel.
