Food inflation softens

Food inflation cooled off a tad to 18.22% in the last week of 2009 from near-20% levels in the preceding week but there was little respite for consumers as prices of potatoes, pulses and cereals continued to rule high. During the week ended December 26, food inflation came down 1.61 percentage points from 19.83% in the previous week since vegetable prices softened as winter arrivals picked up. However, on a year-on-year basis, prices continued to soar. Potato prices rose by 110%, while pulses jumped by 42.21%. On the whole, vegetables were costlier by more than 30% in the week under review than they were a year ago
