GoM on CBI's autonomy

With the Supreme Court setting a July 10 deadline for the Centre to come out with a law to insulate CBI from external influence, the government has constituted a five member Group of Ministers (GoM) to draft a new legislation for the agency “within three weeks”.
It also asked the ministerial body to prepare the draft affidavit to be filed in the apex court in this context within the same period.
The GoM, headed by finance minister P Chidambaram, will have four other members — home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid, law minister Kapil Sibal and minister of state for personnel V Narayanasamy.
A note, issued by the Cabinet Secretariat, said the Prime Minister has approved the constitution of the GoM “to consider the matter relating to an appropriate law being made to provide for the independence of the CBI and its functional autonomy”.
Sources said that CBI director Ranjit Sinha will give his input to the GoM. The agency has asked its officers to prepare suggestions to strengthen the CBI’s autonomy.
