Ambedkar Memorial snippets

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has floated bids to appoint consultants for preparing master plan for ‘Urban Design for Grand Memorial of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’ at Indu Mill.
“It is proposed to engage consultants of international repute for preparation of detailed master plan with due consideration for urban design aspects for the memorial for which MMRDA has called for request for global expression of interest,” said Dilip Kawathkar, spokesperson of MMRDA.
The development authority has planned to even hold a competition among the short listed consultants on the basis of their technical capacity and work experience. The consultant will have to submit a conceptual plan and eventually winning consultant will be awarded the consultancy contract.
Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial is planned on the Indu Mill premises at an area measuring 4.84 hectares. Back in March this year the state government appointed MMRDA as the Special Planning Authority for development of the memorial. Once the layout master plan is finalised, deadlines and estimates will be worked for the memorial apart from obtaining administrative approval, tendering, etc.
In December last year, the Centre had given clearance to transfer 12 acres of the mill land to Maharashtra government. Indu Mill is situated next to Chaityabhoomi in Dadar. Developing a memorial has been a long pending demand of Dalit groups.
