SmartCity Kochi update

The much-delayed SmartCity project received a shot in the arm after the single window clearance board, which met in Thiruvananthapuram, granted building permit for the construction of first IT building.
Following the decision, Tecom, the promoters of the project, made it clear that construction would start in August itself as they plan to award the work next week.
Four firms have taken part in the tender. “Now that the single window clearance board has given the building permit, we will be able to start the construction work by the end of the month. The tendering of piling works will be completed first,” said Baju George, managing director, SmartCity, Kochi.
Tecom had submitted the design of the first IT building to various government departments a few weeks ago. Officials with the health department, KSEB, KWA, pollution control board, commercial taxes department, fire and rescue and factories and boilers inspectorate went through it before granting the building permit. Tecom officials said that they also received the formal approval from the environmental clearance board for the building on Monday. The board had taken the decision to grant environmental clearance earlier. The promoters will now have to file an affidavit before the board, promising to comply with its instructions while constructing the building.
Abdullatif AlMulla, the CEO of SmartCity, Dubai, and the chief business development officer of Dubai Holding, said the building would be ready to occupy by the end of next year. This has also been demanded by IT companies that have shown interest in the project. Officials including IT secretary P H Kurian and SmartCity CEO Gigo Joseph attended the single window clearance board meeting.
Baju George said they had already started land development activities prior to the construction of the first IT building. The first IT building is expected to be completed in 18-22 months at a cost of Rs 170 to 180 crore. The construction of the bridge across the Kadambrayar river will be completed in the first phase itself.
