Sipping tea from a humble glass at a roadside tea shop in Ahmedabad, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi connected with thousands of people at 1,000 different locations across 300 Indian cities on Wednesday evening.
A retaliation to Congress leaders’ ‘chaiwallah’ jibe, the Gujarat chief minister launched ‘Chai Pe Charcha’, a campaign of tête-à-tête over tea to woo voters for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Modi spoke amid loud cheers from audiences and took questions from different cities over a video link.
Warning elected representatives that they would walk into political oblivion if they don’t connect with voters, Modi said, “The (political) situation has changed now. People want their representatives to be accountable.”
In his two-hour discussion, Modi advocated equality in development of western and eastern parts of the country and end of regional disparity. He even took a dig at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying he had been indifferent to his letter on the need to harness green and alternate energy.
Striking out at his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar, Modi said that state isn’t a “poor” state but a victim of poor governance and odd political culture.
“The highest number of IAS and IPS officers come from Bihar. Yet it lags behind. Despite the state sitting on huge coal reserves, there is no new power plant project coming up,” he told the gathering comprising youngsters, senior citizens and children.
However, he refrained from directly attacking Akhilesh Yadav over the deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.
