In what could be inferred as a pat on the back for Isro's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) team, project managers indicated that the spacecraft was on the right track and needed no trajectory correction manoeuvre. The MOM was scheduled to have four trajectory correction manoeuvres -December 2013, June and August 2014 -and the final one just before its insertion into the Mars orbit on September 24.
The final manoeuvre, which will begin at 7.15 am (IST) on September 24, will be a crucial one as the spacecraft will be behind the Red Planet causing a communication blackout for sometime. Isro officials said that a simulation of the orbit insertion will be carried out before the final manoeuvre.
As on Saturday , the MOM is just 53 days away from the Red Planet. Isro officials said that with an approximate speed of 22 km per second, MOM can cover the distance between Mumbai and New Delhi in just one minute.
