SPAR set to launch Hypermarket in Bangalore in December 2008

Dutch retail giant SPAR, along with its India master licensee, Max Hypermarkets India, is set to unveil a 100,000-sq-ft hypermarket on a single level in Bangalore by December.
The store in Mantri mall, which would be housed in the heart of old Bangalore, will also be the first flagship hypermarket of the $37-billion Dutch retailer in India. The big-box format will comprise global retail concepts of SPAR, in terms of design and technology.Spar will develop only hypermarkets and supermarkets concentrating on fresh food and vegetables area in a big way. Max Hypermarkets is part of the Dubai-based Landmark group that operates Lifestyle, Home Centres and Max in India.
SPAR plans to enter tier-II cities in the South next year. To begin with, the retailer is looking at Mangalore. This year, SPAR will enter Hyderabad with 9,000-sq-ft supermarket. Chennai is on the radar for next year. At present, SPAR operates one hypermarket and one supermarket in Bangalore.
Nationally, Max Hypermarkets plans to invest more than Rs 200 crore to set up seven SPAR hypermarkets and supermarkets by December 2009 in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and the National Capital region. Max Hypermarkets hopes to clock revenues in excess of Rs 500 crore on an annualised basis from these seven stores.
SPAR International currently operates 13,700 stores in more than 34 countries across different formats — convenience stores, supermarkets and hypermarkets.
