New Delhi Railway Station facelift
The Rs 6,000-crore makeover of New Delhi station ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games will most certainly miss the deadline with the railway ministry yet to invite bids and select construction companies for what is being touted as one of the toughest infrastructure projects to execute. The master plan and the feasibility report for the proposed makeover of the station, with all the trappings of a plush airport, were recently submitted to the ministry by the Hong Kong-based British consultants Terry Farrell. “We have broadly accepted the report. Once executed, the plan will redefine the rail travel in the country,” a ministry official said. However, he was non-committal when asked if the plan will stick to the deadline. The fact is that the ministry has not even floated the tenders so far to select a company or consortia of construction companies that will give shape to the project. Two meetings were held this month in Rail Bhavan, the latest being on Tuesday, to hammer out broad specifications for the world class stations through public private partnership using the design-build-finance-operate and transfer (DBFOT) model. The ministry is keen that the project gets off the ground.
