Hyderabad's roads to be widened

Motorists on 43 major roads and five major junctions in surrounding municipal areas can expect a smooth ride soon.Roads will soon be widened in Kapra, Kukatpally, Alwal, Malkajgiri, L B Nagar, Gaddiannaram, Uppal, Serilingampally, Qutubullapur, Rajendranagar and Patancheru and Ramachandrapuram municipal circles. While the average width of the existing roads are between 30 to 60 feet, they would be widened to 60 to 250 ft. With many roads becoming congested and bearing heavy traffic volume, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) town planning official have identified some of them for widening after a study. These roads, which are are in the erstwhile municipalities sorrounding the city, were not widened though the traffic volume had been increasing year by year, due to financial and manpower problem. “Initially, the corporation will take up about 14 roads on priority basis. They will be completed by March, 2009,” GHMC additional commissioner K Dhananjaya Reddy said.Road developments plans such as identification of properties that might be affected due to widening are being prepared by the GHMC. The officials said some roads like Road No 8, Habsiguda, would be useful as link roads for the diversion of the traffic. According to Reddy, the GHMC commissioner has released Rs 10 crore to begin the works. While the road development plans are ready, tenders would be called soon.
