BMRC to redesign elevated stations

After speeding up Namma Metro work to offset a delay in the project, its promoters are now getting ready to work on swanky elevated stations.Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) has invited tenders for construction of four such stations on Old Madras Road, Ulsoor, CMH Road and Byappanahalli. These stations are among six to come up on the Cricket Stadium-Byappanahalli section (Reach 1) of the east-west corridor.BMRC expects work on the four stations — on an estimated combined budget of Rs 149 crore — to be completed in 22 months after work is awarded. The construction covers work on the concourse, parking facilities, architectural finishes, power distribution, illumination, fire detection alarm, landscaping, water supply and drainage systems.BMRC has cleared new designs for the elevated stations. According to BMRC sources, “minor changes’’ on aspects like elevation have been incorporated in the new designs. While BMRC arrived at a plan with regard to land use at the stations, officials said there was no “sacrosanct’’ pattern. “Depending on availability of open spaces, we’ll allocate adequate slots for facilities like parking,’’ a senior BMRC official said. The station platforms will be at level with the track. The concourse — a level below the platform — will house facilities including ticket counters. The stations will also have commercial space. Though BMRC is yet to finalize commercial partners, the platforms will have space for ATMs, florists, medical stores and bookstores. The stations’ functions will be integrated with other transportation modes. BMRC will create bus bays at the stations and pick-up and drop zones for cars and two-wheelers are also on the cards.
