Somewhere in Mumbai....

A stray dog in Kalbadevi fell victim to an acid attack in which it got grievously burnt, but its on-the-street will to fight all odds and survive helped him pull through. Now, after its dramatic recovery, it has been named Munna, after Anil Kapoor’s memorable character in the film, Tezaab (acid). Munna, a brown-coloured male stray dog, used to roam about the streets of Kalbadevi, near Dadyseth Agiyary at Khanderao Wadi. The area has several ornament-cleaning units and it is suspected that one of the workers threw acid at it. “On November 9, Munna was burnt on the hind leg near the thigh and the pelvic region. Spotting it writhing in pain on the road, members of an NGO, Manav Mandir, took it to the animal hospital at Parel,’’ said Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals secretary Colonel J C Khanna. He added that the stray was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital and was administered antibiotics and sugar drip. “The condition of the animal was very critical but, probably due to its street-born will to fight on, it survived. I have been told that one of the workers from the gold/silver units at Kalbadevi had flung acid at the dog for some sadistic fun,’’ said Col Khanna. The offender, however, could not be identified. This incident has shocked animal activists. “It is incomprehensible why people are so cruel towards animals. I know an affluent society in Chembur where residents put a dog in a gunnybag and threw it in a drain as the animal had maggot wounds,’’ vet Dr Deepa Katyal said. Bhavin Gathani of the Goregaon-based Karuna Parivar said, “I had once prosecuted a Malwani factory owner for throwing acid at a dog.”
