Jaipur Metro update

The work for developing first phase of Jaipur Metro will be officially handed over to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Thursday. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between the DMRC and Rajasthan government at the chief minister’s office. Chairman of DMRC E Sreedharan will also be present on the occasion. DMRC has drafted the detailed project report and is being extended the work for development of the metro corridor in the first phase. The state government has already established a special purpose vehicle — Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (JMRCL) — which will develop the project through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis.
“The DMRC has developed a successful metro project in Delhi and their experience will benefit for the fast progress of the project,” said G
S Sandhu, principal secretary, urban development, after meeting DMRC officials in Delhi last week.
The DMRC has already invited tenders for development of east–west corridor of Jaipur Metro including ramp at Chandpole, elevated entry and exit to depot from Mansarovar station and two special spans — one
over railway crossing at Ajmer Pulia and second over railway reservation office. The route will have six stations of nearly 140 metre length.
The metro project was previously planned to be developed with major funding from the government. Later it was shifted to PPP model on the recommendations of the Planning Commission. However, the state government decided to hand over the initial phase to DMRC to facilitate rapid progress of the project.
The mega project is estimated to be developed in two corridors, the north south corridor from Ambabari to Pratap Nagar and the east-west corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chopad. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 10,000 crore.

In the initial phase, DMRC will construct the corridor from Mansarovar to Chandpole for 9.2 kilometres. The private partner will be invited at a later stage for development of the infrastructure. The metro will run on elevated tracks from Mansarovar to Sindhi Camp and will continue underground from there on. The state government has approved Rs 1,250 crore to completely fund the corridor development.
The operations of the metro will be managed in private partnership by the JMRCL under the Companies Act, 1956. The board of directors include seven members nominated by the state government while principal secretary, urban development, is chairman and managing director of the company.
