Riots erupt again in Assam

Just when the four districts under Bodoland Territorial Council were limping back to normal after Bodo-Muslim ethnic riots in which 56 people were killed, police found more bodies in Chirang and Kokrajhar on Sunday, creating panic and taking the toll in the clashes to 60. While two bodies were found in Kokrajhar, two others were recovered near Champabati river in Chirang. It isn’t clear when these killings took place.
On hearing about the recovery of bodies, an angry mob attacked bus passengers in retaliation around 10am at Bortola in Chirang, wounding some of them and forcing security forces to fire in the air. At least 15 abandoned houses were gutted by miscreants at Chengnala area in Kokrajhar on Saturday around 7.30pm. The arson took place even as the administration sent back relief camp inmates to their villages amid tight security.
The Kokrajhar police restricted vehicles entering from Karigaon to Bongaigaon and Chirang to avoid fresh flare-up in vulnerable areas. The Bodoland districts are Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Chirang and Baksa.

Clashes and the recovery of bodies in Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) also renewed fears of a return to violence among people. The state government had set an August 15 deadline for all camp inmates to return to their homes. Sources said the sudden deterioration may throw their rehabilitation off track.
Some Bodo leaders who did not want to be named suggested that relief camp inmates should be sent home only after peace committees involving the two communities were formed to allay people’s fears.
Meanwhile, three people were injured when a radio filled with explosives went off near Kalitasupa area of Goreshwar in Baksa district of BTC. The injured were identified as Binaram Deka (60), Dipak Deka (55) and Dhonmoni Kalita (13)..
