Odisha government halts Posco land acquisition

Amid mounting criticism of police repression of protesting villagers in the proposed Posco plant site, the Odisha government stalled land acquisition work in the area.
Officials backed by armed police force had begun uprooting betel vines on Wednesday morning for the fourth straight day in Gobindapur village, but were forced to halt at around noon when hundreds of women and children formed a human barricade obstructing work.
Tension mounted when protesters lying on the ground refused to leave, while their leader Abhaya Sahoo of Posco Pratirodha Sangram Samiti remained seated under a tree continuing his indefinite dharna.
