Vizag airport timings to be extended

Vizag’s dreams of having a full-fledged airport inched one step closer to reality with the Indian Navy announcing on Wednesday that 24-hour airport operations would be kicked off from March 1, albeit only for three days a week to begin with -- Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Ministry of Defence is expected to issue a formal notification soon.
Currently Vizag airport has restricted civilian operations from 6 am to 11 pm, which is a major constraint to international and domestic connectivity. The Indian Navy in a statement issued on Wednesday, clarified that the Ministry of Defence would review this decision after six months following which 24-hour operations may be increased to more days if more number of airlines choose to fly into Vizag.
The move is expected to open the doors to more domestic and international flights from Vizag, which is already connected to Singapore and Dubai and go a long way in boosting the Port City’s prospects as a business and tourist destination. While the Dubai flight commenced on March 25, 2012 and the Silk-Air service began on October 13, 2012, the airport authorities are in talks with Mihin Lanka to operate flights from Visakhapatnam to Sri Lanka .
