The Uttar Pradesh CM’s free laptop distribution programme at Mayo Hall turned riotous on Sunday after his departure when a group of students disappointed at not getting the laptop scaled the stage and damaged it.
While some girls were seen crying at the venue, others indulged in violence at SS Khanna College in the evening. Likewise, another group of boys protested at the venue of the CM’s programme as they got the laptop but without the bag to carry it. District administration has ordered a probe into the protest. The chief development officer (CDO) will conduct the investigation.
A group of girls were protesting for not being given the laptop despite their carrying a token from their respective institutions. They wanted to meet the CM and apprise him about their demands but the security personnel stopped them midway. That left some of them crying.
Another group of boys became hostile as they were not given the bags for their laptop. They protested for about half an hour of the CM’s exit from the venue. The students started throwing plastic chairs and even damaged a part of the stage. In another incident at SS Khanna Girls Degree College, a large number of girls indulged in violence for not getting laptops. They damaged around eight buses parked on the premises of their college.
According to a government press release, 13,732 students got laptops in Allahabad on Sunday.
The Samajwadi Party's free laptop scheme has drawn flak from beneficiaries, many of whom are still waiting for the gadgets even six months after the distribution process was started. Though the state government ordered and has received 14.81 lakh laptops from Hewlett-Packard, only about half of the total numbers have been distributed to the students so far. Although chief minister Akhilesh Yadav promised to expedite the distribution process by deputing SP ministers across districts for the distribution process, the process is still slow. On Sunday, the CM himself was taking part in a laptop distribution ceremony after a gap of over two months.
