Phone Wars : Micromax beats Samsung ?

Indian startup Micromax, established just five years back with a capital of Rs.20 lakh, has overtaken Samsung in the second-quarter of this year, led by growing demand for its smartphones, according to data compiled by CounterPoint Research. The data — which tracks the volumes of both feature phones and smartphones — shows that Micromax had a market share of 16.6% in the April-June ’14 period, while the Korean major ended with 14.4%. In the same quarter last year, Samsung had a market share of 19.3% while Micromax had 9.9%, according to CounterPoint.Samsung did not confirm the market research data.
Stiff competition with the entry of brands like Motorola, Nexus and Xiaomi and the growing dominance of Indian brands like Micromax, Karbonn and Lava have impacted Samsung’s fortunes badly.
Market data released by third-party firms have always been disputed by companies when they fall on the wrong side of the numbers. Companies say that the research firms are not adequately equipped to monitor their volumes and track their actual numbers.
