Reliance Jio snippets

Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani's flagship telecom venture, Reliance Jio Infocomm, has been allotted crucial signalling point (SP) codes by the telecom department (DoT) for launching national long distance (NLD) and international long distance (ILD) services. The development takes Reliance Jio a step closer to the launch of its telecom services in the country.
The signalling function enables interchange of information over longdistance telecom networks. SP codes are nodes that facilitate actual routing of information between two points. SP codes also enable NLD networks to connect with local networks and ILD operators to inter-connect with other overseas networks.
Reliance Jio “needs to use the SP codes within six months, failing which, they will be withdrawn by the government for re-allocation,“ said an internal DoT note, reviewed by ET. SP codes have been allocated to Jio in Mumbai, Delhi, Karnataka and Kolkata for both ILD and NLD operations, the note showed. The development comes at a time when Reliance Jio is awaiting DoT approval to merge its subsidiary, Infotel Telecom, with itself to allow it to offer national and international long distance services under a single permit.
At present, Infotel Telecom owns licences to offer both national long distance (NLD) and international long distance (ILD) services. It is also part of a global consortium building the mega Bay of Bengal Gateway (BBG) sub-sea cable system that is slated to boost global connectivity between South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Asia. The 8,000-km submarine cable system will link India with Malaysia, Singapore, Oman, the UAE and Sri Lanka with landing stations in Chennai and Mumbai. It will also have interconnections to plug on sub-sea links across Africa, Europe and the Far East.
Reliance Jio has permits to offer high speed 4G data and voice services across India through airwaves in the 2.3 GHz band.
