World's Biggest Cricket Stadium in the making

The process of breaking down the Sardar Patel cricket stadium at Motera on the outskirts of Ahmedabad started on Thursday , paving the way for the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) to embark on an ambitious plan to build the world's biggest cricket stadium in its place.
The new sports complex, which will include a stadium bigger than the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), would be spread over 63 acres of prime land. The stadium would have a seating capacity of one lakh, up from the present 54,000. It would have about 80 corporate boxes.The present structure has 25 corporate boxes.
L&T and Shapoorji Pallonji are among the companies which have submitted designs for the new complex. The GCA is expected to call in a couple of more designs for the Rs 300 crore project which will take 24 month to complete, over and above the three months it will take for demolition of the present structure which was built in 1982 and is home to Gujarat Ranji team.
GCA 's joint secretary Jay Shah, son of president of the BJP and the GCA Amit Shah, is personally spearheading the project. GCA vice-president Parimal Nathwani, a Rajya Sabha MP from Jharkhand and president of Reliance Industries Limited, said a 40-room club, which will be comparable with the best clubs in Ahmedabad, would also come up at the ven ue. The complex would also have facilities for several other sporting activities, including soccer.
The executive committee of the GCA organized a puja before starting the demolition work.
