Internet access is now citizen's right in Kerala

In a novel move aimed at bridging the digital divide, the state budget presented in Kerala assembly unveiled an ambitious plan towards declaring access to internet a citizen's right. Presenting the budget speech, finance minister Thomas Isaac told the house that the plan would be implemented by setting up optical fibre network in parallel to Kerala State Electricity Board's power distribution network. The government would provide free internet connectivity to 20 lakh economically backward families. For others, internet service would be provided at a lower rate.
