The ministry of new and renewable energy has invited bids for commissioning the biogas supply system through a piped network in seven villages in Kolwan in Mulshi taluka of Pune district.
The project, called Renewable Energy Supply for Rural Areas (RESRA), is jointly funded by the ministry and Germany . It will be implemented by the ministry and GIZ, an international enterprise owned by the German government, under the Indo-German Energy Programme.
The project would establish biogas supply pipelines to households in these villages and use Napier grass as feedstock for generation of alternative energy . Apart from Kolwan, the project has been undertaken in villages in Korba, Chhattisgarh.
“The project aims at developing and demonstrating renewable energy supply models to meet the energy requirements of rural population and to contribute to a sustainable improvement in living conditions,“ said Nikolaus Supersberger, deputy director, Indo-German Energy Programme, GIZ. “Since biogas provides a clean cooking option, Napier grass was chosen primarily to demonstrate the potential of such energy crops,“ he said.
Right from cultivation of Napier grass to processing of biomass, setting up of plants and pipelines for the supply of biogas to the marketing will be undertaken.
The ministry and GIZ will work with the local nongovernmental organizations and village communities for generation of electricity, biogas and biomass pellets from locally available resources. The linking of the intermediate products like seeds, oil, press cake, pellets and biogas to the neighbouring markets will boost the income generation of villagers.
“We have invited bids for setting up the biogas pipeline system in Kolwan. This project has been commissioned to promote green, affordable and sustainable energy source in villages,“ said VK Jain, director, project management unit, in the Union ministry .
