Amma Marundhagam

After Amma canteens, Amma water and Amma salt, the ruling AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu is all set to launch “ Amma Marundhagam“ (Pharmacy) across the state on Thursday .
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, through video conferencing, will inaugurate 10 outlets in seven districts.
The scheme, which will include 100 such pharmacies across the state, promises to win goodwill for the CM by offering medicines at a subsidized rate. Sources in the co-operative department, which is in charge of the scheme, said that the stores would provide medicines at a subsidised rate.
“The pharmacies will have all the medicines one finds in a routine medical store. There will be a 10% discount on the MRP ,“ a senior official said.
According to officials, a detailed survey has been undertaken to identify areas for setting up the stores. “We've identified the localities where the demand is high and where there are few or no medical shops. We have also spoken to residents' associations before zeroing in on the localities, many of which will be on the city's periphery,“ the official added. Finance minister O Panneerselvam had announced the proposal in the state budget in February. The state government had announced Rs.20 crore would be used from the Price Stabilisation Fund for running the pharmacies.
Officials said 10 stores would be in Chennai. “The idea of opening medical shops is to ensure sale of medicine at a reasonable price to the public,“ another official said.
