Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation’s board is ready to initiate tender and design process of the remaining route-sections of North-South metro corridor too. This corridor of about 23 km has to be built from Amausi airport to Munshipulia. The initial plan was to construct an 8 km stretch from Transport Nagar to Charbagh so that the first rail can be on track by 2016. It was declared as ‘priority section’ for construction. Principal advisor of LMRC E Sreedharan has advised to begin tender and design work in other sections too.
LMRC board met on Monday under the chairmanship of chief secretary to take key decisions on the project. Officials said Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the interim consultant of the project, has been asked to begin work in other sections too. A key area is to design the route of an underground stretch of about 3.5 km around Hazratganj market in the priority section. Besides underground track, sections of about 5-6 kms would be taken up in parts. Under the priority section, a vast metro route called ‘special span’ of about 96 meters is to be constructed above the Mawaiya railway. Normally, metro track is laid with the support of pillars at small intervals but in case of this huge span of railway crossing, a continuous track has to be constructed without any pillar in between.
A separate bid-document and tendering process has to be done for this special span. LMRC board approved DMRC’s bid document for inviting tenders to design and construct this stretch. It will be constructed by a specialised agency and would entail higher cost. The tender would be based ‘Design and Build’ model where the agency would be responsible to both design and build the project. Officials said the process of tendering and selection would be completed in another two months.
