Ending months of suspense, the Chandrababu Naidu government decided that Andhra Pradesh's new capital will be built in and around Vijayawada. While rejecting the Sivaramakrishnan Committee report on the capital, Naidu told ministers he will make a formal announcement in the assembly on Tuesday.
In all likelihood, the capital will be built in the temple town of Mangalagiri, which is located between Vijayawada and Guntur. He said his government will only accept a few of the recommendations made by Sivaramakrishnan panel.
Naidu said there will no change in his decision and issued gag orders to all ministers and told them not to talk to the media on the issue. He appointed a panel headed by finance minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu to oversee land acquisition and prepare guidelines to set up the new capital around Vijayawada.
