The BMC is the only corporation in the state to be classified as an A+ by the state government. The new category has been created to distinguish Mumbai from the rest of the corporations across the state as it has a population of over 10 million. As per census 2011, the city's population is 12.4 million.
There are 26 municipal corporations in the state. The classification of A, B, C and D for municipal corporations and councils is to decide on deployment of manpower for better civic services. Pune has been upgraded from a B corporation to A corporation and the government has sanctioned a manpower of 3,000. It will now have three additional municipal commissioners as well as four chief engineers against the current one. “Water supply , sewage, stormwater drains and roads are key civic infrastructure and cannot be efficiently handled by a single city engineer. Unless there is better trained manpower, it is not possible to deliver good service, hence the change in classification,“ said officials.
In case of Mumbai, the municipal commissioner has been given the discretion to decide on the deployment of manpower.
Nagpur doesn't meet the per capita income criteria for A classification but has been included as a special case. Nashik has been upgraded to the B category as a special case.Thane has been upgraded to B while Navi Mumbai remains in C category and is joined by Aurangabad, Kalyan-Dombivli & Vasai-Virar.
