National carrier Air India notched the highest passenger load factor of 83.5% for October and became the third-largest domestic airline in terms of market share on the back of low festive season fares and a strategy of merging flights.
Air India ferried 19.5% of domestic air passengers during the month, according to DGCA. The top slot, however, remained with budget carrier IndiGo, which had a market share of 31.9%, while Jet Airways and its low-cost arm JetLite accounted for 20.5%. Low-fare carriers SpiceJet and GoAir registered 17.3% and 8.5% market share, respectively.
An Air India executive said the merging flights with lower loads helped in increasing load factor. “The increase in market share came because we kept our prices lower than the competition during the month. Airlines, which sold a lot of their inventory at abysmally lower prices, were pricing themselves higher at the last minute. We priced ourselves lower than them and were able to earn much more in revenues than the competition on overall inventory basis,” the executive said.
