Hyderabad to get water from the Godavari

The Andhra Pradesh state cabinet cleared the proposal for taking up augmentation of water supply to the Hyderabad urban agglomeration from river Godavari and decided to start the work by November.The government had appointed WAPCOS as consultants in April 2006 to conduct a feasibility study. The consultants submitted its report in March 2007. According to the detailed project report, the scheme will cost Rs 3,375 crore and was cleared by the state level standing committee meeting in January 2008. The scheme is to be funded under JNNURM and the government of India, the state government and the urban local bodies will share the outright grant. The project is to be completed in 30 months time and will have a capacity to store 10 tmc water in the first phase.The state government had shelved the phase-III of the Krishna water project claiming that no water was available in Manjira and that river Godavari was the best and most dependable source.The phase-III of Krishna water project was to be completed by 2015 but the government decided to complete phase-II of Krishna water project and draw water from Chevella Pranahita project on Godavari.
