BSNL slips

Tata Teleservices, with a subscriber base of 77 million, has become the fourth-largest operator in terms of wireless subscribers overtaking BSNL. TTSL is now behind only Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications and Vodafone. TTSL was the first to introduce the per-second tariffs that forced competitors to follow suit. Both TTSL and TTSL (Maharashtra) offer dual technology (GSM and CDMA) mobile services across India. After its collaboration with Japan’s NTT DOCOMO in November 2008, TTSL has so far launched GSM services under the “Tata Docomo” brand in 18 telecom circles where it has received spectrum. According to latest Trai figures, Bharti had over 139 million, RCOM over 113 million, Vodafone over 111 million and BSNL 73.7 million wireless subscribers by end-July. TTSL claimed to have clocked a growth of 100% in the year gone by as it had wireless subscriber base of 38 million in July 2009
