Mumbai Monorail snippets

Over 1,600 workmen are toiling daily on the first line of the monorail from Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle, which will be the world’s second longest monorail corridor. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials point out that the longest monorail project is the Osaka Monorail corridor (23.8 km) and the Tokyo Monorail at 16.9 km is the second longest. When the Mumbai monorail starts functioning, it will be 19.54 km long and the world’s second longest one.
MMRDA commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad said that the monorail will be ready by March next year and they are making efforts to ensure the Metro line from Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar is also ready by that time. So,Mumbaikars will have access to both services. According to MMRDA officials, the monorail project will cost Rs 3,000 crore compared to the Osaka monorail cost Rs 12,690 crore. “The Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle route will have 18 stations,’’ said Gaikwad, adding that the problem of high-tension electric towers belonging to Tata Power had been solved by raising their height at RC Marg, Bhakti Park and GTB Nagar. The monorail route can now be accommodated. Major changes may have to be made in the Jacob Circle area to avoid congested portions, added transport sources. Gaikwad, however, said that this has been achieved with a few minor modifications.
