Ahmedabad's SP Ring Road to be 6 - laned

If all goes well, you will be able to zoom along on a six lane SP Ring Road, non-stop with 19 flyovers and two road overbridges! A Rs 2,000 crore MoU was signed by Sadhbhav Engineering with the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) on Thursday to convert the existing four-lane SP Ring Road into a six lane non-stop stretch circling the city limits. Chairman of Sadbhaav Engineering, Vishnu Patel said that once the authority gives a nod to start work, the six-laning of the SP Ring Road will be commissioned by March, 2014. “The road will be broadened by four metres each on both the sides”, Patel said. Patel said that considering the growth of the city and increase in the traffic, the 76-km SP Ring Road is foreseen to be one of the most congested roads circling around the city. “Traffic has been growing at the rate of 10-15 per cent on the SP Ring Road annually and is expected to become acutely congested in the years to come. Currently too, the Bopal circle is too overcrowded’, Patel said. The expansion of the ring-road will include construction of 19 flyovers which will virtually render the road a non-stop stretch to zoom on. Two road over-bridges will also be constructed on the railway crossings passing through the road. “The fly-overs and overbridges are being added as a measure to ease off the future congestion on the road”, said Patel. AMC officials said that the MoU has been signed keeping in mind the future infrastructure visions and needs of the city. “Provisions to facilitate construction of mono-rail and sky-bus is also being made as part of this expansion”, officials said. The divider between the six lane road will be highlighted with lights to make it a safe zone. “The lights will be solar-powered”, said Patel.
