India's longest Railway Tunnel

An 11-km-long tunnel through the Pir Panjal range was completed on Friday, removing the last hurdle to connecting the Kashmir valley with India’s vast railway grid and making train journeys possible all the way to Srinagar. Built over seven years at 7,000 feet, it is India’s longest railway tunnel and the second longest in Asia. It is part of the Udhampur-Baramulla rail project that is expected to connect the Valley with the rest of India in December 2012. The 10.96 km tunnel, aligned straight from the north to the south, is waterproof and equipped with a modern fire-fighting system.
