Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has sought the support of chief minister J Jayalalithaa to complete the work on the Kudankulam nuclear power project in Tirunelveli in south Tamil Nadu which he said was essential for the country’s economic growth. On a day when delegations, including one led by TN finance minister O Panneerselvam, met him in Delhi to urge him to call off the N-project in the sea-side hamlet of Kudankulam, Singh said in a letter addressed to Jayalalithaa, “For a large and fast growing economy like ours, and given the volatility and uncertainty of international energy markets, it’s in our national interest that we tap all sources of energy, and diversify our energy mix. Nuclear energy is one option to enhance our energy security. The Central government will ensure that this is pursued with full regard to the safety, livelihood and security of the people. I count on your support in ensuring the timely implementation of the Kudankulam project,” the PM said. Singh met three delegations from TN, including one led by the anti-nuclear committee from Kudankulam, and assured them that a team would visit the village to allay the fears of the people. Soon after the meetings he wrote the letter to Jaya detailing the steps taken by the Centre. He told a delegation a high-level committee would address their concerns on safety of the project.
