Karnataka bans gutka, paan masala

Gutka and paan masala containing tobacco and nicotine as ingredients have been banned in Karnataka. Manufacture, storage, sale and distribution of gutka and paan masala whatever name they are available in the market have been banned.
Doctors and officials from the food safety department said the ban should bring down tobacco addiction. They said that tobacco addiction was resulting in youths in the 20s getting cancer.
India is one of the top 20 tobacco producing countries in the world. Karnataka joins Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Mizoram among other states in banning sale and distribution of products containing tobacco.
Any violation of the ban on sale and manufacture of gutka and paan masala will entail 6 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10 lakh.
