Kochi Metro gets going

A collective roar rose from the 4,000-odd crowd as the huge screen set up on the premises of the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium beamed a graphical journey of the Kochi Metro on Friday morning.
The crowd remained glued to the screen when the animated train wound its way from Aluva and moved past Kochi’s famous landmarks to reach Pettah.
For them as well as for the state, the countdown had begun for a journey that will turn the city into a true metropolis. And it will take 1,095 days, starting Friday, for the first Metro to chug along the Aluva-Pettah stretch.
Flagging off the civil works for the Metro, which began at Changampuzha Park near Edappally, chief minister Oommen Chandy said, “India’s Metro man has assured us that he would complete the work in 1,095 days. The work should not be stopped at any point of time. All of us have to provide support and remove all obstacles for the project,” he said.
