Chief minister Narendra Modi led his party to an emphatic win in the by-elections in Gujarat by winning all six seats which were previously with the Congress.
This included the two parliamentary seats of Porbandar and Banaskantha and four assembly constituencies of Dhoraji, Jetpur, Limbdi and Morva Hadaf. The victory came despite Modi not hitting the campaign trail. With this, the ‘Modi-for-PM’ noises are likely to become louder during BJP’s Goa conclave. The victory could not have been sweeter for Modi, coming on the day his bete noire Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) lost a by-poll seat to Lalu Prasad’s RJD.
The BJP has now won 17 of the 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat. In the state assembly, it controls 119 of the 182 seats.
The Congress leadership accepted the rout but blamed bogus voting and misuse of government machinery for the loss.
